Pennsylvania plays host to a variety of American history, from the revolutionary war to the civil war. But there’s some newer national treasures to appreciate in PA – the collector car scene. The are a number of beautiful antiques, classics, and customs we’ve found in our travels – here are just a few:

A Citroen DS19! Truly a car that took the world by storm, Citroen received ten times the number of orders it had anticipated at its debut in 1955 at the Paris Auto Show. The car showcased many novel features for its time including power windows and power steering (among others), but its true innovation was the hydraulic system underlying most of the operating aspects of the vehicle. The hydraulics served as motivation for the power windows and steering, but also the suspension, widely considered a revolution in the trade-off of ride comfort for handling. To this day, a late and well-kept example can sell for six figures. But any model from its two decades of production can make a unique contribution to a collector’s garage, as it did to the modern automobile industry.

We’ve been blogging and traveling all over the country in search of the beautiful, exotic, and original restorations and customs that make the collector car world exciting. Everywhere we go, there are new ideas, fresh restorations, and untouched relics, gently worn by time. What makes today’s mystery collector car special? A number of engineering feats for its time that still challenge us today. Admittedly, the car is a bit iconic, though much less for Americans that elsewhere. What is this classic, and how is it unique? Check back next week to find out.

Appreciation for classic American muscle cars continues to be strong throughout much of the collector car segment. We noticed a large number at recent shows we attended. Here are some of the highlights.

Companies like Lexus have received considerable and due scrutiny for such ludicrous suggestions as buying a loved one a new $50,000 vehicle as a surprise holiday gift in a time when most are still reeling from the recession. And while the expense is preposterous for all but the very wealthy, maybe there is a great idea buried in there somewhere.

There are a number of classic cars and collector cars in need of restoration throughout the United States. This is especially true of ‘modern classics’ – generally cars that are legally classics in the US but haven’t yet become popular. Most of these cars were made from around 1973 to 1991. Examples might include the Mazda RX-7, Honda Prelude, Jaguar XJ Series II & III, Citroen CX, or Alfa Romeo Milano.

These cars are typically available in repair-needed condition for relatively little money, and can make a great project for couples, a parent and child, or friends to work on together. A wealth of information and support is available online for a wide variety of classic vehicle restorations, and communities exist for enthusiasts around the country to support one another and have a good time. Though these models are somewhat less popular today, you never know – you might end up one of the lucky few who chooses the next great collector car!
